In 2006, innovative students at Florida A&M University began a legacy now known as the State of the Black Student Summit. Led by Shevrin Jones, Alexia Robinson and Allen Ahmadi, SBSS was formed as a yearly forum where FAMU students could engage in conversation with invited panelists about issues that affect the Black American student and community. Now in its third year, SBSS carries on that legacy and unites nearly 1,000 student participants and members of the community each year.

The SBSS has focused on themes such as “Utilizing the Light of the Past to Illuminate the Future,” and “Moving from the Margin to the Center.” At the conference, distinguished speakers have used these themes to portray the importance of minority leadership in society. SBSS has provided such notable guests as author Sistah Souljah, television personality A.J. Calloway, preacher and civil rights activist Bernice King, and author Omar Tyree.

Mission Statement: To enrich the lives of Black American students by engaging them in a conversation about issues in the black community.
